Pakistan should explore Maldives for exports- Maldivian HC February 18, 2013
Meeting at ICCI
 
Maldives meets most of its needs through imports and this situation offers Pakistani businessmen a good opportunity of enhancing exports by increasing contacts with their Maldivian counterparts. 
 
This was said by H.E.Ms.Aishath Shehnaz Adam, High Commissioner of the Republic of Maldives during a meting with Mr.Zafar Bakhtawari, President, Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI). She said that construction sector of Maldives was another area in which Pakistan and Maldives could collaborate for mutual benefits.
 
She said that tourism is the main industry of Maldives’s economy as about 100,000 visitors annually visit this country of islands and added that both countries could reap benefits by increasing bilateral cooperation in this area. The High Commissioner further informed the meeting that the fishing industry in the Maldives is the island's second main industry.
 
Ms.Aishath Shehnaz said 100 percent of population of Maldives is Muslims which provides an additional advantage to strengthen bilateral trade and economic relations between Pakistan and Maldives. She also stressed to establish a Pakistan Cultural Centre in Maldives which would further enhance bilateral deep rooted trade ties between two countries. She urged the Pakistani business community to explore untapped trade prospects by holding of single country exhibitions in Maldives.  
 
Speaking on the occasion, Mr.Zafar Bakhtawari, President Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry appreciated the role of Maldivian High Commissioner in strengthening relations between Pakistan and Maldives, hoping that she would continue to work for furthering friendly relations between the two countries.
ICCI President said Pakistan should also take expertise from Maldives for improving its tourism industry as Pakistan is home to a diverse number of tourist attractions which include very beautiful landscapes, ancient civilizations like Indus Valley and Gandhara civilization as well as Buddha sculptures.
 
Mr.Bakhtawari said frequent exchange of business delegations and establishing direct B2B contacts are the options which should be used to exploit untapped bilateral trade and investment potential in both countries.
 
He said Pakistan has the potential to meet import needs of Maldives at very competitive prices because Pakistani products are cheaper for Maldives as compared to European and other countries. He termed agriculture, pharmaceutical, telecommunication, IT, education, health & tourism as potential areas of mutual cooperation between the two countries.
