Businessmen asked to cooperate with PRCS to serve the humanity August 21, 2013
Meeting at ICCI

Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) is the largest donor-driven humanitarian organization in the country responding immediately whenever any disaster or calamity hits people, but receives 95 percent donations from outside Pakistan. Maximum people including businessmen should cooperate with PRCS so that it could alleviate the sufferings of the most vulnerable people in Pakistan. This was urged by Gen. (Retd) Ch. Muhammad Nawaz Khan, Chairman PRCS while addressing business community at Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

He visited ICCI along with his team to brief the businessmen about the initiatives of PRCS for providing relief to needy people. He said PRCS has footprints throughout the country and it provides relief during and after disasters, both natural and manmade, primary health and welfare services in remote areas and for underserved people. He said businessmen can also partner with PRCS in different relief projects.

He said PRCS has 92 district branches, 37 Disaster Management Cells, 103 Health Units, 7 blood banks, 109 ambulances, 253,000 volunteers to help troubled people. Highlighting major achievements of PRCS from 2005 to 2012, he said it provided relief and medical assistance worth Rs.4.5 billion to approximately 2.7 million beneficiaries and undertaken reconstruction of 36 facilities of worth Rs.1.4 billion in the aftermath of 2005 earthquake. Similarly it provided relief of worth Rs.9.68 billion to 4.1 million people during Super Floods 2010 while it has provided total relief of worth Rs.20-billion so far. However, all these relief works need the financial support of people and maximum people should support PRCS for providing more relief to needy people.

Speaking at the occasion, Zafar Bakhtawari, President, Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry appreciated the role of PRCS for serving the noble cause by reducing the problems of vulnerable people. He urged that maximum number of businessmen should come forward and join hands with PRCS in its noble cause.

He said ICCI should be given representation in PRCS’s Board of Trustees which will help in further improving its functioning. He suggested that PRCS should also start different commercial projects to improve its financial viability. He said ICCI is ready to start commercial joint venture with PRCS so that it could become self-sufficient in financing.

Zafar Bakhtawari said ICCI has already participated in many welfare activities and donated an amount of Rs.3-million to Akhuwat for providing interest free loans to needy persons. It also donated an amount of Rs.3.2-million for a cancer hospital in Peshawar and would continue to contribute for people welfare activities. He assured that ICCI would provide all possible cooperation to PRCS in providing relief to needy people.
